Running Shoes 101:

Test run in shoes to make sure they conform to your running style

What's the best running shoe for you?

You wouldn't think of buying a car without test driving it! The only way to tell if a running shoe fits your running style is to run in it. Follow the steps for proper fit and then run in shoes for at least five to ten minutes. How comfortable is the shoe? How does it flex? Pay careful attention to the flexibility of the shoes. Does the shoe flex for your foot where it should? Do you "feel" the shoe pulling on your foot at the heel. That is a sure sign that the shoe is not flexible enough.

Your checkoff list:

  • Does the sockliner aggravate your arch?
  • Is your ankle bone pressing hard against the side collarliner?
  • Does the shoe feel clunky or over protective?
  • Do you feel any seams that might bother your feet?
  • Does your foot slap on the ground instead of landing smoothly?
  • Do you feel like the shoes are excessively controlling your feet or foot plant?
  • Do the shoes feel excessively hard or too soft?

Remember: runners don't break in shoes, shoes break in the runner.

So make sure they fit!!

Mike, Got the Loco Perfectos Thursday night. I had already run that day, so I just tried them on and walked up the driveway. They felt good, but obviously they hadn't really been tried out yet. Friday was a rest day. Saturday I had a little local 10K to run.
I put the Locos on with the intent of warming up for 5-10 minutes in them and then switching to a "broken in" pair of shoes for the race. To make a long story short, I was 30 minutes off on the start time of the race and they had lost my registration, so by the time I got my bib, I had a couple minutes to warm up and no time to head back to my truck to change shoes, so I broke a cardinal rule and ran the race in a brand new pair of shoes.
They were great. Felt super, rode perfectly. I had a "over age 30" PR in the race and ran 5 more miles in the shoes when I got home.
I'm impressed. Jed R
